How did you get started down this career path?

Well I haven’t really begun my full-fledged career just yet but I’m getting there. Currently, I am the Features Editor of RhymeStreet Magazine and I’m working on relaunching,The Mot’f, with Brandon Wright. I’ve been writing since I was small child and I participated in my high school newspaper and literary magazine, so I suppose that’s when I experienced my first form of “writer enlightenment.”

Who are some people you idolize and why?

I’m uncomfortable with the phrase idolize because idolize is often in the company of false gods or idols so I can’t really agree with that phrase but I am influenced by many. Film, literature, magazines and music reign supreme in my world.

Jean Michel Basquiat is my utmost source of inspiration. His life and the body of work he left behind have definitely propelled my creative being in a greater direction. But some other people I’ve been inspired by over the years have been Agyness Deyn, Allison Mosshart, Grace Jones, Edie Sedgwick, Lisa Bonet, Spike Lee, Franz Kafka, William Burroughs, Shel Silverstein, Sylvia Plath and the late 1960’s London punk era.

Music is a dominant component to my state of being. Some of my  favorite musicians are Jim Morrison, Gil Scott-Heron, Gray, Iggy Pop, Janet Jackson John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Al Green,Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Sly and the Family Stone, The Staple Singers, Donny Hathaway, James Blake, Kurt Cobain, Local Natives, RZA, Method Man, ODB, Kelis, Nas, Pharrell, Aloe Blacc,The Kills, The Dead Weather, Active Child, Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, Bon Iver, D’Angelo, The Drums, Florence and Machine, Mos Def, Kid Cudi, Robyn, Tune Yards. I could go on for days.

What person or persons do you look up to in the fashion  field? any favorite designers and or stylist?

Some of my favorite people in the fashion industry are Kate Lanphear (Style Director of Elle USA) Kelly Cuthrone (PR), Elin Kling (Mag. Editor, Designer, Blogger) Julia Sarr-Jamois (Fashion Editor of Wonderland Magazine/Stylist) Some of my favorite designers are Alexander Wang, Rick Owens, Philip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenberg, Christopher Kane and Vivienne Westwood.

What advice do you have for aspiring stylist?

Although I don’t have much experience with styling but I have many friends that have styled and are aspiring stylists, I can give some general advice that anyone can take with them. Have goals, write them down somewhere where you can see them daily as a constant reminder of what you are working towards, research know your past, study the successes and mistakes and learn from those lessons, always prepare for the unexpected and finally just get out there and work, experience is the way to get in almost any door.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I will be living in New York, writing, playing my ukulele, collecting vinyl and slowing dancing to Otis and Coltrane in my living area. Basically the same thing I’m doing now just in New York.
