When did you start making Jewerly and what made you want to do it?
I started my jewelry line last year, after I turned 17. I've always been very creative, but I had just recently got back into painting. The line happened very spontaneously, I was looking for bold, bright and one of a kind accessories, and I couldn't find anything like what I was imagining. I decided to merge my love for art and painting with my love for fashion and accessories, and that's when Yumnah Najah Designs was born.
What makes your pieces unique?
Every piece that's painted is one of a kind and painted by hand. There's something very special knowing that no matter what you do, no piece will ever be able to be duplicated. The pieces in the line range from bright, big earrings to small watercolor studs. No matter what your style is, Yumnah Najah has pieces in it for anyone looking to add a touch of creativity to their outfit. Its for women who are comfortable expressing their individuality and don't mind being noticed.
What or Who are your biggest Influences?
I get inspiration from everywhere. For my first collections I got a lot of inspiration from being outside around nature. I get inspiration from other artists, especially from the Harlem Renaissance era like Jacob Lawrence and William Johnson. A big influence in the approach I take to creating is Van Gogh...today hes one of the biggest artist we know, but when he died his work was only known to a few people. He didn't paint to become famous, he painted because he loved it and it was his outlet.
Who Are Some People you would like to collaborate with?
Solange, Janelle Monae, Michelle Obama---there are so many! lol. I'd love to see my pieces on women who I admire because they're comfortable and free with who they are and it radiates through their individual sense of style.
Where do you see yourself 5years from now?
Inspiring young people through my line and building Yumnah Najah into a brand that continues to represent elegance, creativity and individuality. I want to build a strong brand that expands into other forms of artistic expression. I hope the line will inspire young people to know that no matter how young you are, its never to early to go after what you want out of life and create the life you imagine for yourself.
